Mathura Temples

Mathura is the birthplace of Shri Krishna. It is one of the Sapta Puri, the seven cities considered holy by Hindus, also is called Mokshyadayni Tirth.

Mathura Birla Mandir

  • Birla mandir is also known as the Gita Mandir as it has a pillar with Sri Mad Bhagwad Geeta inscribed on it. These pillars have all the 700 verses, divided into 18 chapters, carved with precision.

Shri Krishna Janmasthan

  • According to Hindu traditions, Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva in a prison cell where they were confined by his maternal uncle Kansa, a king of Mathura, due to prophecy of his death by the child of Devaki.

  • According to tradition, a temple dedicated to Krishna was built the birthplace by his great grandson Vajranabh. The present site known as Krishna Janmasthan.

  • Lord Krishna rest her after killing Kans.

  • Vishram Ghat is a ghat, a bath and worship place, on the banks of river Yamuna in Mathura, India. It is the main ghat of Mathura and is central to 25 other ghats. The traditional parikrama starts and ends at Vishram Ghat. Lord Krishna is said to have rested at this place after killing Kansa.

​Bhuteshwar Mahadev Temple

  • Four ancient deities of Lord Shiva residing at Mathura are known as dik-palas, “protectors of the directions.” They stay in Mathura to protect the dhama. Bhuteshvara Mahadeva protects from the western side.

  • The tradition amongst the vaishnavas is that when coming to Vraja one must first go to Mathura to take permission from him to enter the dhama. 

  • According to the beliefs of people in Mathura, Bhuteshwar Mahadev shields the city from evil. It is a common belief in the city that the pious temple of Bhuteshwar was established to protect the city and its residents from the evil forces, hence the name Bhuteshwar.

  • According to the legends, Mathura was established when Shatrughan killed the demon Madhu. After the demon’s assassination Shatrughan, the younger brother of Sri Ram established the city of Mathura. The Bhuteshwar Temple in Mathura is established since the same age.
